How can I best learn from and use the artist Maggie Hambling in relation to my coursework project on landscape and space.

Its important that you dont respond too literally to Maggie Hamblings work, like, say, because she uses blue  you will then use blue in your next piece of development work. We need to focus more on the techniques that she uses in her paintings of the sea and transfering some of these techniques into the painting you have been doing of the landscapes of your local area. You could do some attempts, narrowing down the type of brush strokes she uses and trying them out yourself to achieve a similar effect. We can also think about the main themes of Maggie Hamblings work, those being the wild movement of the sea and her emotional response to its power. She tranfers these ideas into the techniques she has used, such as applying thick layers of paint to the canvas and building up many layers of paints. You could think about how you feel about the landscapes you have been painting and drawing and how this may transfer into the way you paint them. For example, if you find the landscape calm and quiet then perhaps you will use smooth and flat layers of paint. Its great to respond to both the themes of an artists work and the techniques they use at the same time, this will show the examiner that you are able to understand and look at other artists in an intelligent and sophisticated way.
