How do I close-read a prose passage in German?

Here are the steps you need to follow when you are writing about a prose passage in German: 1) When close-reading the passage the first time: Get a first impression of the text ans underline any words which you are not familiar with. If you are permitted a dictionary, you may look the words up and write a definition next to them where they occur in the passage. If you are not permitted a dictionary, think of the word in the context of the sentence. Are you familiar with the stem of the word? How do the other words in the sentence shape its potential meaning? Is there any contextual information which you can look up?2) When close-reading a second time: When you read the passage a second time, highlight key words and phrases in the passage. These could be themes, pivotal actions, symbolisms or even a peculiar turn of phrase. Highlight phrases which you think give the passage its essence. Then, what really helps to remember the close readings is giving each paragraph a title. "Sinnesabschnitte".Watch out for stylistic devices. What are they in the passage? What is their effect on the reader and how to they impact the reader?3) Now that you have gained a deeper understanding of the passage and how its meanings and themes are communicated through different kinds of sentence construction and stylistic devices, write these out on a separate piece of paper: What happens before and after the passage? How can this passage be summarised? Are there any pivotal character or plot developments in the passage? What are the themes and do they apply to a greater context within and beyond the book the passage originates from? What are the stylistic devices and what is their effect?
