Solve the equation 3x + 1 = 4x - 2

In order to tackle this equation, we have to keep in mind that whatever we do to one side of the equation we have to do to the other. Our aim is going to be to get all of the x's together on one side of the equality and everything else on the other side, so that we can solve for x.First we want to get all of the numbers on one side, so we can choose to get rid of the '- 2' on the right. To do this we can add 2 to both sides. This gives us a new equation3x + 1 + 2 = 4x - 2 + 2 which we can simplify to3x + 3 = 4x Next we want to get rid of the '3x' on the left, so that we have all of the x's on the right hand side of the equation. We do this by taking away 3x from both sides, giving us the equation 3x + 3 - 3x = 4x - 3x which simplifies to3 = x And then we have solved the equation, as required!
