What themes are prominent in 'El Laberinto del Fauno'

There are several prominent themes throughout the film.
The Spanish Civil War is the most evident theme to the viewer as the film is set during the period and plays a pivotal role in the characters lives.
Symbolism- there is a consistent use of imagery and symbolism in the film, such as the toad being interpreted as the socio-economic condition of Spain at the time. This is further explored at dinner with Vidal and his guests eating extremely well while the rest of Spain is starving.
The role of women is explored by Del Toro with Mercedes and Carmen at opposites to each other but both strong female characters in their own right.
Disobedience plays a key role with Ofelia torn between the choices she faces at first and gradually becoming more and more disobedient.
Fantasy is prevalent with the underground kingdom becoming a refuge for Ofelia in the dark times in the real world.
