The recommended price of a ladder is £75. The ladder is sold in 2 shops, one with a 30% discount the other with a discount of 2/9. How much is the discount in the two shops and which is cheaper and by how much? Non-calculator

Shop 1. Ladder is discounted at 30%. 30% = 0.3. 0.3 x £75 = ? £70 x 0.3 = £21.00 £5 x 0.3 = £1.50. Total discount is £22.50. Price for the ladder is £52.50. Shop 2. The discount can be calculated £75/1 x 2/9 = £150/9. By short division method answer results in £16.6666. appropriate rounding means the discount is £16.67. £75.00 - £16.67 = £58.33. The difference between the two prices is as follows... £58.33 - £52.50 = £5.83.
