What is meant by the term referendum? (6)

This question can be broken down via the following means;
-Definition - A general vote by the electorate on a single political issue which has been referred to the people by their respective administrations.
A Referendum is NOT a vote to elect political representations similar to a General Election but is, however, a yes or no vote on a usually contentious issue.
Examples may include Brexit, Irish Equal Marriage or Abortion in Ireland this year. Also, it is good to include figures such as the percentages (i.e. 52% of people voted for Brexit)
