Explain how the structure of the lung enables rapid gas exchange?

The lungs have many alveoli which provide large surface area thus diffusion occurs quicker. The alveoli have walls that are one cell thick providing a short distance for diffusion. In addition, there is an extensive capillary network around the alveoli which provides large surface area for gas exchange. Also by circulation a high concentration gradient is maintained.
