For A-Level exams or coursework, your paragraphs should follow a PEAR structure. This stands for…POINT - EVIDENCE - ANALYSIS - REFER.As an example, let’s answer the question: 'How does Homer's use of metamorphosis explore morality in The Odyssey?'POINT: How does this paragraph directly answer the question you are being asked? What is the point you are trying to make with it? Summarise it in a sentence or two. For example: Homer’s Odyssey explores moral motivation through metamorphosis. In this example, I am answering the set question directly.EVIDENCE: Why do you think that this is the answer to the question? What evidence do you have from the text to support the claim that you have made? For example: They are drawn into Circe’s palace through hedonistic desires, pursuing: ‘her spellbinding voice’. Insofar as they are driven by sensual impulses and not rational deliberation, they behave as animals. However, despite their bodily motivations, the men do not prefer a beastly life. When Circe transforms them into pigs, they are unhappy: ‘the men’s minds stayed steadfast as before. / So off they went to their pens, sobbing, squealing’ (ll. 64-5).In this example, I have presented quotes from the text and summarised the parts of the plot I feel support my argument.ANALYSIS: You have read this evidence in a certain way, in order to get to your argument. Can you explain your thinking process and help the reader to understand why you think this evidence means that your point is correct? Analyse your quote(s). For example: This metamorphosis contrasts the bovine actions of the men with their rational minds. Here, I have helped the reader to see why I believe that the evidence I have provided demonstrates that my argument is correct. I have explained how I got from my ‘evidence’ to my ‘point’. REFER: Remind the reader of the question you are answering. How does what you have said refer back to, or answer the question? For example: This demonstrates that human nature has both rational and bodily motivations. Here, I have summarised where I expect the reader to end up after reading my paragraph. At higher levels, it will also explain what has been added to the essay overall by this paragraph.
