What impact did Louis Pasteur have on modern medicine?

Louis Pasteur showed that airborne microbes were the cause of disease, where previously people had blamed superstition. He built on the work of Edward Jenner, who discovered the smallpox vaccine, and helped to develop further vaccines. Pasteur’s career showed how conservative the medical establishment was at the time and his work revolutionised the way we approach illness.
