What experience do I need?

In terms of experience, some people say the more you do the better but I believe that it is more what you get out of the experience than how many you do. It is better to do 1 or 2 and learn a lot than do 5 or 6 and not learn anything. When you are on your experience, try and talk to lots of different people as everyone has gone through different things in their lives so it os good to listen and learn from them. Plus once you are a doctor, these people could be your patients. I would also say that your work experience or volunteering does not have to be solely medical as they want you to show you are a well rounded person. My work experiences were Camp America as a lifeguard, volunteering at my local hospital and volunteering with a local charity. Out of all three of them I would say I learnt more doing Camp America purely because I threw myself into every opportunity I had and met such a wide range of people that when it came to personal statements and interviews, I had a lot to reflect upon and talk about.
