Describe and explain how blood glucose levels are controlled following a meal.

Following a meal, the levels of glucose in the blood will increase. This increase in the level of glucose needs to be controlled, otherwise the levels of glucose will become too high and someone could end up hyperglycaemic. The organ that helps control blood glucose is the pancreas, which releases insulin in response to higher levels of glucose. Insulin causes glucose to move from the blood into the liver and other cells, converting it to glycogen. This means that the levels of glucose in the blood decrease back to normal levels.
