Deforestation is a human activity that leads to increases in atmospheric carbon. Deforestation leads to declines in carbon-breathing trees, allowing for greater quantities of carbon to build up in the atmosphere. Another indirect human activity that causes increases in carbon is government regime, which is responsible for setting policies such as ‘cap and trade’. These policies put limits on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere by big industry. Looser policies may be implemented depending on the regime in power, and this can increase emitted carbon levels.
