What is personification?

When human qualities are given to an inanimate object or abstract idea. For example, 'the flowers danced in the wind.' Another example would be 'time gnawed away at the old house.' When looking for personification of objects it is useful to try identify the verb that proceeds the noun ie. danced/gnawed/smiled. All these verbs are typically used to describe the movements of human or animate objects.
