First of all, highlight all of the verbs and adjectives in the text. Correct conjugation of verbs and agreement of adjectives is extremely important in translation and marks can often be lost due to silly mistakes. Above these words, make a note of which agreement (masculine or feminine, singular or plural) and which conjugation (1st or 3rd person? Present or Imperfect?) is necessary. Once you have made a note of these things, it becomes easier to translate the text as you become more aware of what is expected of you. Your first translation may seem too "English" so afterwards, check your translation and see if you can change anything to make your text more idiomatic. Then, check the translation for any mistakes that you can identify and rectify. A good way to check spelling is to start from the bottom and work your way up through each words. Checking backwards can make you focus more on each individual word.
