It has long been said that money dominates politics in the US, due to its diverse nature, and the inability to reform campaign finance effectively. This has led to multi-billion dollar election campaigns, 2016 being the most expensive yet, demonstrating to some extent that money is an important factor in election campaigns. However, Hillary Clinton’s campaign, whilst winning the popular vote and having the most funding, lost overall, which was in part due to bad strategy, inability to react to important events, the unity of the Democratic party and the image of the candidate as one who had been a Washington insider. Indeed, Trump was the definition of an outsider, who used his status to dominate the media during the electoral campaign with outrageous status, using the power of social media to generate headlines. Therefore, in order to fully examine the argument that money is a significant factor in presidential elections, there is need to explore three core areas, the use of money, the strategy of campaigns and the unity and strength of a party's ticket.
