Describe and explain some of the adaptations xerophytes have against living in extreme dry conditions.

Xerophyte adaptations include: Curled leaves - create a micro-climate of more humid surrounding air, hence less water is lost to the dry surroundings. Small hairs on leaves - slow surrounding air flow, therefore trapping the more humid air around the leaf, less water is lost to the surroundings by transpiration as the concentration gradient remains less steep. Fewer stomata - reduces quantity of water lost by transpiration during photosynthesis. Thicker waxy cuticle - this reduces the loss of water by evaporation through the epidermis.
