General Tips for Personal Statements

Whilst Personal Statement work is far more productive with a statement on which to improve, there are some general tips I can provide to help with the first draft. Your first sentence and paragraph should be made as perfect as you can. Whilst all of your personal statement is important, due to the sheer amount that some Universities have to go through your later words may never be read if your first are not as strong as they can be. You should tailor your personal statement to what you are applying for. If you are applying for a philosophy course talk about philosophy relevant books and activities you have done, such as any philosophy or debate clubs you may have attended. I would recommend reading 'The Problems of Philosophy' by Bertrand Russell. Collect some points from books to mention and elaborate on in your statement to show your subject knowledge, ability and your proactive interest in it.Avoid common phrases such as 'Since I was young' or 'I am passionate about' as they are overused and will not help you stick out from the crowd. Show, don't tell, your interest in your subject.
