How would I begin analysing this passage?

Firstly, we would make sure there was a clear understanding of the overall book/play in general so that we would be able to put the relevant passage into context. For example in Inspector Calls there is a running theme of the unjust class system at the time, so we would look out for comments made with regard to this key theme such as Mr Birling referring to his workers in a derogatory manner. Once we had identified the important messages that the passage conveys, we would then analyse the literary techniques used to vividly portray these themes, such as similes metaphors use of comparison and so on. We would then discuss how to structure these ideas into an essay, by compiling similar points into a concise paragraph and maintaining continued focus on answering the question.
