66 people went on a day trip and each took part in one activity: skating, bowling or painting. 43 were female. 4 out of the 10 that went skating were male. 20 people did painting. 10 males went bowling. How many females did painting?

This question is worth 4 marks and requires us to work with the information we are given. To set this up clearly, I would suggest drawing out a table with the three activities listed down the side and male and female as headings. Also include a row and column for the totals. We can start filling in our table with the information given in the question. For example, we know 10 males went bowling so we can add this value into our table. We are going to use these values to work out the missing ones. If we know there were 66 people on this day trip, 43 of which were female we can use subtraction to find out that there were 23 males on the trip. From this total we can subtract the number that went bowling (10) and the number that went skating (4) to find that 9 were left over painting. The question told us that 20 people were painting so we can subtract 9 from 20 to find out how many females were painting.
