Before an animal was killed, the sacrificial animal would be driven along a set out route, however only Athenian citizens were allowed onto the Acropolis. A sacrifice was a way of showing respect to the Gods, and all levels of Athenian society were allowed to partake, making it a very inclusive celebration. The animal would be sacrificed to which ever God was chosen and there would be a feast of sacrificial meat, usually around the Dipylon gate.
Each person had a place within the sacrificial ritual. There would be musicians playing lyres and flutes, wealthy metics dressed in purple to show their wealth and old men would carry olive branches. This shows what an inclusive celebration a sacrifice was.
