When should I use the subjunctive?

The subjunctive is not a tense, but a mood. This means it can be applied to (or used) in different tenses. There are specific phrases which are followed by the subjunctive, however there are also certain circumstances where it must be used. These are as follows:If the sentence is expressing:fearhopedoubt / uncertaintywishing for something It is also used in sentences where someone describes a feeling or emotion towards something (does not have to be a fact)You can also recognise the subjunctive as it often follows the word 'que' meaning 'that'.Some frequent examples of phrases that follow the subjunctive are je souhaite que (I wish that)bien que (although)Il est possible que (it is possible that)NOTE 'Il est probable', meaning 'it is probable' is difficult as it sometimes follows the subjunctive but not always, however it is simple to understandYou use the subjunctive when:used in the negative form or as a question (interrogation)eg. 'it is probable that the football match will be cancelled (because of the rain)'This phrase does NOT use the subjunctive because it is an affirmative phrase. -'It is not probable that the football match will be cancelled.' OR 'Is it probable that the football match will be cancelled?'These two phrases show the word 'probable' being used as a question and negatively and therefore both require the subjunctive. These are the circumstances and phrases where the subjunctive is used.
