What does globalisation actually mean?

Globalisation can be described as the increasingly connected and interdependent nature of the earth, its economies, its societies and its political systems. This can happen as a result of increased flows of things like goods, money, ideas, people and information, across national boundaries. Organisations such Nike or Apple can be described as transnational corporations (TNCs), because they operate in many different countries. These companies, as well as supranational organisations like the United Nations, can speed up globalisation by increasing flows, and making the world 'feel' smaller. However, when answering a question on globalisation it is very good to recognise that globalisation happens in some places faster than it does in others. 'Global cities' like London, New York and Tokyo are often far more interconnected with other places than more remote rural areas. If you can do this in an answer, it will really show you understand globalisation as a concept!
