Explain why some locations remain 'switched off' from globalisation

Some areas remain 'switched off' owing to a fear of cultural erosion or a desire to retain heritage, such as occurs in North Korea; North Korea has banned social media like Facebook and Twitter in an attempt to minimise its population's exposure to foreign countries and cultures. North Korea also exclusively airs news which has been heavily subjected to scrutiny and censorship; North Korea is able to implement such policies as it is a dictatorship, thus the leadership faces little resistance. Other areas can remain 'switched off' owing to less controllable factors. The Sahel region has experienced very little globalisation as it is remote and landlocked, thus it is difficult to access, and hinders travel and trade. The Sahel also possesses no infrastructure required for basic trade, as it has a highly underdeveloped economy and little demand for trade, with it being preoccupied with the demand for more basic needs to satisfy its population, such as clean water and basic sanitation. Furthermore, the Sahel lacks significant or rare raw materials, and it certainly lacks the technology to extract what little there is there, thus it is not attractive as a trading partner, nor as a place for traders or companies to locate.
