How are nutrients absorbed into the circulatory system in the small intestine?

Firstly I would ensure the student understands the basic concepts of diffusion and what nutrients are. I would describe how food substances move through the digestive system and break down into amino acids, simple carbohydrates, fatty acids and glycerol. Then I would describe and illustrate the structure of the small intestine including the villi, capillaries and the lacteal; emphasising the importance of the large surface area of the small intestine necessary for diffusion. Next I would describe how the amino acids and simple carbohydrates diffuse into the capillaries and how the fatty acids and glycerol enter the lacteal of the villi. To ensure the student as fully understood these concepts, I would follow up by getting them to explain it back to me and then completing some exam questions on this topic.
