Explain the key steps in mitosis.

Mitosis is the way in which cells divide. Once one cell has undergone DNA replication, it contains 2 sets of chromosomes (diploid). Once mitosis has occurred, there will be two identical haploid cells. Steps:1) Pro phase; the chromosomes condense, the nuclear envelope breaks down and the mitotic spindles form from the centrioles at the poles of the cell. 2) Metaphase; the chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell and the mitotic spindles attach to the chromosomes at the centromere. 3) Anaphase; The sister chromatids are pulled apart at the centromere and are pulled towards polar sides of the cell. 4) Telophase; The chromatids reach the poles of the cell and begin to decondense, the nuclear envelope reforms and the mitotic spindle breaks down.
