The 4 main ways in which a coastline can be eroded are: Attrition, Abrasion, Hydraulic action and solution.
To begin with, attrition is the collisions of the rocks in the sea which causes them to become smaller and more rounded. Abrasion is the action of the sea carrying rocks and debris and colliding the material against the cliff. This acts like sandpaper and wears away the coastline. Hydraulic action is when the waves of the sea collide against the cliff and cause air to be compressed in the cracks. When the waves leave the air bursts out and the rock is broken. Solution is when the chemicals in the sea dissolve the rock. Rocks such as limestone and chalk are much more prone to this.
