Describe the process of transcription

Transcription is the process where a segment of DNA is copied into a segment of mRNA. This takes place in the nucleus. First the segment of DNA needs to be unzipped, so an enzyme breaks the hydrogen bonds between bases to unzip the DNA and expose a single strand of DNA. Then mRNA bases (A/C/G/U) that are complimentary to the DNA sequence line up and are joined together by the enzyme RNA polymerase to produce the strand of mRNA. This mRNA strand is small so leaves the nucleus through the nuclear pore into the cytoplasm where translation will take place
