The three styles of tectonic plate movement are convergent (when plates move towards each other), divergent (when plates move apart), and transform (when plates slide past each other). At convergent plate boundaries, two plates will move together and collide. The more dense plate will sink below the less dense plate in a process of subduction. This can form an ocean trench. At divergent plate boundaries, two plates move apart creating space inbetween. Less dense magma will rise up to fill this gap which them cools and can form Mid-Ocean Ridges. At transform plate boundaries, plates move past one another, without either being subducted into trenches or uplifted into mid-ocean ridges.
