“All societies, wherever they are, enjoy the benefits of a shrinking world.” Discuss this statement.

Globalisation has certainly benefitted some societies, such as the U.S and China, which has allowed them to assert themselves as global hegemons due to their power in trade. Globalisation has dramatically changed the economy, for instance transport has become cheaper and more efficient with freight shipping. It means TNCs, MNCs and other businesses can export goods on a large scale, which is beneficial due to the ideas of economies of scale.
A society that has not benefited from globalisation is the Jarawa community on the Andaman Islands, India. They are an indigenous group of people who are said to be one of the most secluded and isolated societies in the world. Due to globalisation, there way of life is being threatened and even their existence too is in danger. Air transport has significantly increased due to increased and sustained advances in the technology of planes, which in turn has led to an increase in tourism. The Jarawa have been exploited and turned into a tourist attraction, which is leading to exposure to the outside world. The Jarawa are at risk of contradicting diseases that their vulnerable immune systems will have had no experience with before. These diseases that tourists bring can lead to death and even “extinction” of the tribe.
