Using a production you have seen in the last 12 months, describe and explain the lighting of the production, and how this reflected, if at all, any of the themes of the production itself.

The production I went to see was 'Heathers: The Musical' at the Haymarket Theatre on October 15th 2018. The production follows our lead, Veronica Sawyer, starting out at a new school in America as a high school student, and her story of where she fits in at the school. A couple of the core themes include death and despair - our lead character Veronica kills several her high school class mates with her boyfriend, JD, because they do not fit in to the society that JD and his Father believe in. Just before the interval, there are isolating pools of stark white light, that encourage the feeling of despair. It involves Veronica and JD chasing 2 high school football players because they are trying to take advantage of Veronica, however JD begins to chase them, and we see each character pop up in an isolated pool of light. They are looking around, and this isolation reflects the theme of despair because they are clearly on their own in the light, surrounded only by darkness, and ominous tones of music.
