Why was the Munich Putsch important? (4 marks)

The Munich Putsch was the attempt by the Nazis to overthrow the government in Southern Germany in 1923. It was most important in how it changed the methods that the Nazis would use to try and gain power. After the Putsch the Nazi party used far more democratic measures to try and gain power through the Reichstag as well as increasing their propaganda campaign. The Putsch also gave the Nazis martyrs in the form of the 16 men killed during the violence, something they used in their propaganda as defending Germany from the Weimar Republic.A less important impact of the Munich Putsch was the imprisonment of Hitler which was only for nine months and so only limited his activity for a brief period. However, the time in prison did give Hitler time to compose Mein Kampf and clarify his tactics, so it was important to some extent.
