What occurs during the metaphase stage of mitosis?

Metaphase is the third stage of mitosis, following Interphase and Prophase. During interphase, the cell replicates its organelles and centrosomes and synthesis of specific proteins for mitosis occurs. During prophase, spindle fibres appear, chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane breaks down and then this is followed by METAPHASE. METAPHASE is when the homologous chromosomes align at the equator of the cell, in preparation for Anaphase.
