The Spanish island of Mallorca situated off the East coast of Spain has experienced a rapid growth in tourism. Tourist numbers have rapidly increased from 400,000 visitors per year in the 1960s to 11 million visitors per year as recently as 2013 and thus 70% of local people are now employed in the tourist industry. Many of these jobs involve working in local bars and restaurants which tend to be very popular during the peak summer months; thus helping to increase wages. As a result a high proportion of locals have a significant disposable income which can be spent on healthcare services to increase their quality of life. In relation to economic opportunities created, the increase in wages generated by the growth in tourism has seen an uptake in the number of locals owning cars. This is highlighted by the fact that Mallorca now has the highest car ownership rate in Europe and this brings many advantages for locals; for example the ability to travel longer distances as well as shorter journey times.
