Can you describe the gross external structure of the kidney?

Gross Structure of the Kidney: The urinary system of the human body consists of two kidneys, one left and one right. Continuing from the kidneys are two ureters , the urinary bladder and one urethra. The kidneys are bean shaped organs that are approximately 10 cm in hight and 5 cm in width. Each kidney is covered in a fibrous outer layer known as the renal capsule (this gives the kidney a shiny glossy feel). On the middle side of the kidney is a structure known as the renal hilum, here there is a passage way for entry of the blood vessels that supply the kidney with oxygen and nutrients. The blood vessels here also take away waste products from the kidney.
