Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of judicial precedent.

Judicial precedent is central to the common law system. The three main advantages are: consistency, certainty and reliability. Although, these must be balanced with the disadvantages of contextual relevance, rigid decisions and slowness in the growth of the law. Each one will be discussed in turn.
Precedent is the vehicle behind common law decisions.
