John has £385 he wants to give to Charlie, Ben and Sarah. He gives them the money in the ratio 1:2:4 respectively. How much money does each person get?

You have a total of £385 to split to Charlie, Ben and Sarah in the ratio of 1:2:4. First, I ask myself how many parts am I splitting the £385 into? From the ratio, I know the total number of parts = 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 parts total. Now, I split the £385 into the 7 parts, how do I do this? I divide (goalpost method) 385 by 7 (385/7=55).Therefore, each part is worth £55.Now look back at the ratio, who has how many parts?Charlie has 1 part = £55Ben has 2 parts = 2 x £55 = £110Sarah has 4 parts = 4 x £55 = 2 x £110 = £220So Charlie gets £55, Ben gets £110, Sarah gets £220. And to check I've done it correctly, check the amount of money I've given out equals the amount we started with. (£55+£110+£220=£385, we're good!)
