What sort of stuff should I write about in my personal statement regarding work experience?

This is an area where a lot of people mess up. They have vast amounts of experience shadowing healthcare professionals and they want to write it all down and what they end up doing is listing off all the examples of work experience they have. What you should do is mention a maximum of 2 examples where you have done work experience and expand on them. For example, you could highlight a difficult patient that you saw and describe how the healthcare team treated them. The key thing is that you must write down what you learned from your work experience. This means that you should write down what skills you saw the doctors using and then give examples of where you have displayed these skills (e.g. "I learnt that one of the skills required to be a successful doctor is empathy. Through my voluntary work with handicapped children, I have improved this skill as I often have to appreciate what they are struggling with at the moment and act accordingly"). You should also mention how your work experience gave you an honest idea of what a doctor's life is like and how you have a realistic approach to medicine as a career. Finally, you should give an idea of how long your work experience placements lasted. Most medical schools require a minimum of 2 week shadowing.
