How to effectively analyse a poem

  1. begin by reading the poem, noting anything that catches your eye. If you do not fully understand the poem, read it a few times2) ZOOM IN - write down a list of techniques and highlight them in the poem. e.g. rhyme, alliteration, imagery, syntax, metaphors etc.3) If you find a line particularly interesting, write it down separately and analyse all the elements 4) ZOOM OUT - think about how these techniques combine with the context of the poem and add to the general ideas/ themes of the poem
