How do I approach analysing live performance?

Start by splitting the production into different categories. This could be: Overall Directorial VisionCasting and CharacterisationSet & PropsCostumeSoundLightingIf you have a copy of the text note down all the aspects of the live performance that deviated from or particularly supported ideas from the original text. Perhaps the text seemed to suggest a detailed modern home environment but in performance the set was extremely minimalist. Or perhaps the text suggests strained dynamics between the characters which was amplified by casting actors with different skin colours, suggesting an undertone of racism. If you do not have a copy of the text fill in your categories by comparing this live performance to its marketing material and what it claims to set out to do. You could also compare it to similar styles of performances that you have seen before. For example, the sound design in this production involved using a lot of electronic drones which contrasted with the Shakespearean language and story. This technique allows you to note down the apparent choices that have been made by the creators of the live performance. You can then go on to consider why and for what reason they were made and begin your analysis. This should be a good, easy way to approach analysing live performance, rather than a text on its own.
