There are 720 boys and 700 girls in a school. The probability that a boy chosen at random studies French is 2/3 The probability that a girl chosen at random studies French is 3/5 . Work out the number of students in the school who study French.

To find out how many students take French, start by finding out how many boys take it, and then how many girls, and the sum of these will be the total number of students taking French. There are 720 boys, and 2/3 of them take French. Start by finding 1/3 of 720, using long division. This gives 240, and multiply this by 2 to find 2/3 of 720, which is 480.The number of girls taking French would be 3/5 of 700. Again using long division, find 1/5 of 700 to be 140 and multiply this by 3 to give 420. The answer is 480+420=900.
