Who was the most effective constitutional nationalist leader in Ireland (1800-1914)?

IntroFirstly, think about what it means to be an 'effective' leader. Some criteria could be electoral support, influencing decisions in Westminster, and achieving legislation. Note that these criteria are specific to constitutional leaders, as opposed to revolutionary nationalist leaders. Who are the leaders? Parnell, O'Connell, Redmond.Compare the three leaders in each criteria. 1) Electoral/Mass supportOC support in County Clare election 1828 (and before that in 1826 to elect pro-Emancipation candidates).Note his reliance on Church (Cath/Repeal Rent, alienating Prots)Parnell's support leading to 86 seats in 1885 GEAlso support of Church meant he had to concede on education (but note that he was Prot so did not face the same problem of alienating them as R and C). Cath maj in Ireland at 75%Redmond also holding balance in 1910 Note OC's charisma (monster meeting Cork 500,000). Also note ability to involve rev nat (OC 1798 veterans on stage at meetings; Parnell New Dei in 1879 with Davitt and Devoy; Redmond and Irish Volunteers during 1912-14).But also different electoral contexts important in Ireland, where Cath were less privileged than Prots, meaning OC had the toughest job. 2) Influence in West Balance of power held by all: 1835 Lichfield; 1886; 1910. But Parnell more crucial than the other two– actually able to switch parties eg 1885 to Cons for Ashbourne Act for them to drop coercion. Tories not compromising with R or OC. Individual importance: P at Kilmainham vs OC and Clontarf decision or Redmond up until 1910. P called 'uncrowned King of Ireland' Can say that forcing const crisis was constitutional not OC as an individual. P obstructionism in a way that OC was not able to do. However, note again different contexts). OC and P brought Ir Q to the forefront of British politics. Can say that in the case of R this was done by New Liberals and the People's Act rather than R. 3) Legislation All achieved some reform: OC 1832 education reform, 1833 Ir Church Act, Drummond's reforms P: Land Act Amendment in 1870s, Ashbourne (v important), weakening of coercion in Kilmainham. Only R really got what he wanted (OC not Repeal and P not HR). Can assess importance of British governmentsupported with R, supported CE in case of OCSay that P brought HR to the forefront to Br politics But then didn't OC do so with Repeal? ConclusionEvaluate who was most effectiveThink about why they were the most effective. Context? If so, is it the British government who are actually more important? Is there one area that is more important than the other, and if so why? (Eg is achieving legislation more important than achieving mass support?)
