Water is being managed through techniques domestically, in HICs many homes have been fitted with water meters. People with meters use much less water as they are charged for how much water they use, rather than a fixed amount a year regardless of volume used. Short flush toilets use 1/3 less water than a normal toilet and can be fitted which reduces the amount of water used to flush the toilet. Another technique used in to manage water use in HICs in agriculture is that new irrigation systems have been developed. Drip irrigation gives water straight to the root of the plant rather than spraying it in the leaves. This means that no water is lost through evaporation and run off. Another management strategy is that rain sensors are devices activated by rainfall and identify when crops need to be irrigated. They are connected to an automatic irrigation system which then shits down if it starts to rain. In industry such as Walkers Crisps, they have reduced their usage of water in their production by 50%. This has been achieved by installing 30 water meters in their plants. Recycling water in their production process, which reduces the amount of water wastage to help manage the amount wasted. Also educating their work force about the use of water so many people do not waste and understand the necessity of managing water use. In Cadbury they recycled the water and then used the water for processes such as cooling which has reduced their water consumption by 15%. A government initiative called ‘Envirowise’ which is running a programme called The Ripple Effect, this teaches companies how to become more water efficient by installing things such as push taps and shower regulators.
