Describe active transport

Active transport is the movement of a substance against its concentration gradient across a selectively permeable membrane. In order for an organism to carry out active transport energy is required to overcome the energy barrier posed by the concentration gradient that wants to move the substance in the opposite direction along its concentration gradient, energy is provided in the form of ATP.
