How do I prepare for the HAT?

The HAT is not a paper to prove a universal understanding of all history but instead a chance to show how you can adapt fundamental skills of analysis to approach a topic that you will likely be unfamiliar of. The paper consists of one question requiring you to focus in on a single-page source and will test how you dissect, discuss and examine the extract. Since no knowledge outside of the source itself is expected, the skills one should look to develop are predominantly source-based. These skills can be honed in through reading through other primary sources and discussing them through with others. The paper is intended to be challenging and it is therefore important to try and think broadly about what the question is asking even without any prior knowledge on the field.
