Red blood cells transport oxygen around the body via the circulatory system and are the most common cell in the blood. They carry a special protein called hemoglobin which binds to oxygen, allowing it to be transported. Red blood cells are high in iron and a low red blood cell count could be the result of anemia. Red blood cells are bi-concave in shape to maximize surface area and also lack a nucleus which is unusual but, allows them to hold more oxygen.
