One strength of using the biological treatments of anti-depressants to treat depression is that they have been proven to work very quickly at relieving the symptoms of depression and improving patients mood etc. This can be particularly useful if the patient with depression has been contemplating suicide and requires immediate relief in order to return to some level of normal functioning quickly so they can then perhaps work through the reasons behind their illness through other means such as talking therapies. It is also particularly useful in cases of depression where there is no obvious cause like bereavement or family or money struggles, therefore they only require fast action against their symptoms as talking about their illness may not be as productive
One weakness of using anti-depressants as a treatment is that a lot of research has shown that they may not be as effective in treating younger patients, and there is a risk of the medication actually worsening their condition and driving them to extreme measures such as suicide. Research has found that a lot of the studies done into medication like SSRIs is carried out on very small samples in order to produce significant results and produced by large pharmaceutical companies that have made the drug and therefore want to get doctors to prescribe it in order to make money from it. Therefore, it is possible that many of these anti-depressants may be less than effective at treating depression and may actually risk making the illness worse.
