Describe and Evaluate the Multi-store model of memory (16 marks)

The multistore model of memory is a memory model which suggests that memory is composed of 3 stores: the sensory memory store, the short term memory store and the long term memory store. Each store is encoded differently. for example, the short term store is encoded acoustically and the long term store is encoded semantically. Information is taken into the sensory store and passed to the short term store by attention. Information is passed from the short term store to the long term store by repetition. It is also important to note that forgetting is different at each stage. A strength of the multistore model of memory is that it is supported by evidence from case studies. For example, Clive Wearing.A weakness of the multistore model is that you don't always need to rehearsal to pass information from the short term store to the long term store.Another strength however, is that the multistore model can be supported by highly empirical research by fMRI's.
