This sounds like quite a hard thing to do in 4000 characters. My advice would be to focus on the personal development you gained from doing various things. Like if you had a job don't just say you waited tables for a summer write about how this helped to develop communication or teamwork skills for example. Also try and convey a passion for the subject you are applying for. For example have you read any books or watched a documentary related to what you want to study that have made you want to study this area in depth?
