What literary techniques does the author use to convey the atmosphere of the scene in the extract?

One literary technique employed by the writer is the use of pathetic fallacy. The description of torrential rain helps to set the mood of something scary and ominous. It foreshadows that something terrifying and dangerous is coming. The persistence and the almost consuming nature of the rain also helps to demonstrate that the situation is hopeless and inescapable for the characters involved.
