Briefly explain how both social and environmental considerations are important in sustainable development (6 marks)

Sustainable development is defined by the Bruntland Report as development which meets the needs of future generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. For this to be successful, social aspects must be considered. Perhaps the most important social factor is to tackle poverty in the most deprived areas, largely by providing adequate housing and healthcare. In doing so, people will take pride in their area, and so the town character will be preserved. In addition, the countryside must be protected in order for development to be sustainable, so discouraging urban sprawl by providing sufficient opportunities for communities allows for sustainable development. In addition, environmental factors must also be considered. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on lowering greenhouse gas emissions in a bid to reduce climate change, and so the use of viable alternatives which are more environmentally friendly such as hydropower or solar panels to heat homes may allow for more sustainable development. Also, improved land stewardship and better waste management, for example more recycling and less landfill, is also essential for sustainable development. Hence, it is clear both social and environmental considerations are important in sustainable development.
